Kiera's Homeschool

I love homeschooling Kiera. It's probably her age, but her mind works in such different ways! I find it challenging and entertaining!

Like above, she can't write her numbers yet, but she tried (see the purplish 6, and my blue 3 that she traced)... she often gets frustrated, but this time she just started making circles. She counted the items, and then drew that number's worth of circles on the line. I love it! I watched her in amazement, surprised that she came up with this on her own.

And this morning, she was doing the pages where you cross out the item that doesn't belong in the group. I was more interested in how she thought the group went together than if she crossed out the correct item. One time she had a refrigerator, a stove, and a bear. She crossed out the stove and said the bear and the fridge go together because bears like food! Other times she would cross out a random item because she associated the other two with people instead of actually with each other, so she crossed out the one she didn't associate with people.

FUN times!!!

Costco Composters: East Wenatchee

If you are interested in one of the round, rotating compost bins that Costco had earlier this spring, they *may* be arriving Saturday. I'm checking into it more tonight, but there are only 6 on order, and they FLEW out the door when they were in several weeks ago. Many many people have been asking, so if you want one, let me know and I will make sure to pass the word when they come in.

PS, yes, I do want one, so there's really only going to be 5! ;-)

Oh the things they say...

I want to remember all of them! Kiera is just priceless in the things she comes up with.

This morning, she's watching me cook bacon. As I poured the grease into a jar...
"Mommy, what dat?"
Me: "It's bacon grease. I'm cleaning it out of the pan."
K: "Ew yuck. We drink it?"

Oriental Trading Order

Is anyone interested in splitting some crafty kits from Oriental Trading? Melia is specifically interested in the Treasure Chest kit... But one unit makes 12! They break down to be pretty cheap individually, so I thought I check with all my friends :-)

We would also be up for splitting other items if your kiddos have some they're interested in.

More randomness

Mommy: Guess what I found in the freezer! Popcorn Shrimp! Would you like to have those for lunch?
Kiera: Blech- I never had that kind popcorn before.

It's funny, as the day goes by, there are many things that catch my attention and I think "I should blog about that..." and then I forget amidst the business of the day. There was something really funny that I wanted to blog about, but now I can't even remember what it is! Oh well. I'll ask Gabe and see if he remembers, I know I told him about it.

Oh yeah, this morning, I gave Isaac pear chunks for breakfast. Yesterday he had mandarin oranges for lunch, and would put them in his mouth, bite down with his mouth open, and ended up being just soaked. So for the pears, I put the heavy duty bib on with the hopes that it would catch all the juice. I then placed the bowl of pears on his tray.... and he promptly picked up the bowl and dumped it on the floor. So much for planning on the bib saving the day :-)

Toddler Emotions

Nothing tries my patience like tears. And Kiera has become the waterworks princess.

She turns starts to cry when I say no, she starts to cry when I say yes to sissy, she starts to cry when I get irritated that she's already crying, she starts to cry when she has to pick up something or put something away, she starts to cry when I want her to finish her meal, she starts to cry when I say no more tea/juice, only water. She starts to cry when it's time for bed, she starts to cry when she's tired by 10 am, she starts to cry because she's tired and all of the sudden misses Ezri. (Rose and Cocoa? Not a word.) She starts to cry when she has a wet pull-up or an accident, she starts to cry because she's driving sissy crazy and sissy wants to play by herself, she starts to cry when I say we're staying home today, she starts to cry when her friends aren't home... Get the idea?

Oh yeah, and those new rules I was talking about? Now, she starts to cry when a timer goes off. *sigh*
Patience, Lord. Please grant me lots and lots of patience.

(Then again, you know what they say about praying for patience.... ;-)

What plans have you changed since becoming a parent?

Since reading Andrea's post on their plans for parenthood, I've been thinking about what we planned for and how each child has changed our thoughts and perspectives. It's been fun, and I've laughed out loud at myself a few times. I thought I'd share :-) (BTW, this is not to contradict her post- their plans are great, and I'm sure they will be super parents! I was just thinking about us and the past six years!)

* Breastfeeding is natural- it can't be that hard. Of course we will do it.
Real life: Breastfeeding is one of the hardest and most painful things I've ever done. Even three kids later, it took all of my stubborn will-power not to give up.

* We won't use a pacifier to plug our kids up.
Real life: Um, yeah. those are great little tools... especially in church! I do love that Isaac sucks his thumb, but I wish we could use a binkie with him too!

* I don't want my kids to be attached to anything, so we don't have to take it away later.
Real life: Babies are going to attach to things; parents might as well at least try to control what it might be. Melia's was her binkie, Kiera had a binkie and a stuffed bear, and Isaac is all about his thumb and blankie. The only troublesome ones were the binkies, but true to what I read, it took 3-7 days to "untrain" them. That thumb might be a different story. In the economy of babies, exchanging 3-7 days of work for a good 12-18 months of magic is a good trade!

* I hope to give my kids a better education through homeschooling.
Real life: That's not what it's about. Our greatest desire is that our children are educated within a Biblical worldview, not a humanistic one. Plus, the joy that I get from watching them learn is unmatched... try the whole "first-step" thrill times 20! It's not the easiest thing, especially when trying to decide which tools to use, but the benefit is well worth the effort.

* If I discipline the right way, my kids will be well-behaved.
Real life: We are sinners expecting baby sinners to be "good!" Consider how we disobey our Heavenly Father, and yet we wonder how our little darlings can be so naughty!? I truly believe that at the heart of obedience is a respect for authority, which as our children mature will develop into a heart of obedience to God. If we strive to instill this at a young age, hopefully our children will have an easier time following the Lord. Not to say we don't constantly have to be prayed up- because when I'm not, I'm the one who needs a "talking-to!"

* I might co-sleep. I might even nurse while sleeping!
Real life: Bad idea. Bad bad idea. Nursing while sleeping causes damage, which translates Pain! Co-sleeping is great for some, but not for us! Gabe can sleep through anything, but I'm such a light sleeper that those babies keep me up all night!

* We won't let our kids watch a lot of TV.
Real life: While this is a constant battle, nothing captures their attention quite as strongly as that darn light-box.... Even enough to let Mommy get a shower... or possibly even sleep in a little longer!

* We won't do this, and that, and that...
Real life: I was discussing "loving your husband" with an older co-worker (what an encouraging conversation we had! Blessing!!!) and she mentioned that with young children everything is so much more difficult because some days you are just trying to survive! Isn't that the truth! I needed to learn that sometimes it's ok to let the "parenting rules" slide because it's a rough day. And when it's been a rough day, the best decision is to sit down and settle in with the kiddos. Get a bunch of books, or a movie (!) and enjoy your moments together. This is much more healing that the promoted "mommy alone time," even though we all need our quiet moments too. I end up feeling closer to my kids when I've spent quiet time with them instead of quiet time by myself. However, nothing seems quite as rejuvenating as a relaxing date night... ;-)

I am sure God will keep teaching me lessons... and hopefully someday my perspectives will reflect more of Him than me.
What about you? Have any funny perspective adjustments you'd like to share? ;-)

Game Suggestions?

Ok, so one of our new rules (because we are always making new rules!) is that the girls get a quarter for every three pages of school work they do (with a minimum of three). Another new rule is that they have to pay for their computer time (which helps regulate it between the two of them).

My issue is that the games that they've been playing aren't exactly challenging for Melia. I want to find some better ones, and I did find some on Sesame Street, but I'm wondering if any of you have suggestions on some good learning games that you've let your kiddos use.

The ones that they've been playing are Hidden Pictures, Sesame Street and PBS.org. Thanks!!!

So thankful for Lavender oil..

I burned myself on the coffee pot this morning. When I woke up it was still on, but I pulled it out to check if there was any coffee left... nope. So, smart me, touched it to see if it was still hot.

Yeah. It was still hot, and all four of my fingers told me so.

Random Blogability

Melia: (starting to watch a Duggar show) Mommy, I just love this show...

Me, to Gabe: I really wonder how normal it is that the phrase "Oh, did you run into the wall again?" occurs so often at our house...

Be Still My Heart

This morning when I entered Isaac's room to get him up, he jumped up and down in his crib. Oh my...

Busy again :-)

And today, we didn't eat dinner until after 9pm! I, too, am getting my hiney beat by this time change. I just can't believe it didn't get dark until after 7:30! I should have thrown something easy in the oven, but roasted veggies just sounded so yummy! Unfortunately, I think I inhaled them so quickly that I barely tasted them...
But I did finish all my posts for Rev 2! Now, on to the final...

Meanwhile, I love 3 year old grammar:
Kiera: Momma, can I feed Isaac?
Me: No- you always make a big mess.
Kiera: Please mommy? I promise I feed him face.

Later, after Isaac made a little mess with his dinner...
Kiera: Whoa Isaac! You messy!
Me: He is messy isn't he?
Kiera: You need clean him up! You do clean him up! Yes.
(she's like a mini-Yoda sometimes...)

Little Piggies

Melia: Mommy- I just drank so much juice it made my tummy pop a little. My shirt popped up and you can see my tummy!
Me: Were you being a little piggie?
Melia: Yep! I oinked that juice right down through my nose! Oops, I mean my mouth!

Guard Yours

Just a little cutie...

Kiera was watching me peel her an orange at the sink. It sprayed us, and we both sneezed, starting a fit of giggles :-)

Funny how that works..

Yesterday we hosted a fun birthday dinner for Annie, and fun it was! I told the girls we were doing it in the morning, and they were literally wired for the entire day! As we were cleaning Melia was running around in circles :-) She also left Uncle Shaun the cutest message ever: "Uncle Shaun. Happy Birthday. Please call me back." *click* Cracked me up!!!

Boy I'm tired today though! We went for a walk this morning, took Gabe lunch at the gun range (overtime! woohoo!) and now the girls are painting and I can barely keep my eyes open! I need to get to work on a cart cover for a gal at work, but can't seem to get motivated... The best thing though is that the table is basically clean from having company last night! :-)

A very personal post

I am trying to play catch up tonight on our Revelation II class, as the final opens next week, and I am still 5-6 weeks behind in my posts. The tests are easy to keep up on; I normally can finish one in 10 minutes at the most, but the posts take serious time and thought.

I had one I didn't want to answer, and yet felt drawn to. As I started to ponder it, more came from my heart than I expected, and after finishing it I thought it would be good to share. I hope this is a blessing to you.

When was the last time you told Jesus you love Him? List seven reasons that you do.
At first I thought, "I can't answer that! It's personal!" But this time I thought, "When did I? Why don't I?" And here's my answer...
I know I know my personal definition of love. How I feel about God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit does not fit into my catagory of love. Love does not seem a strong enough word to describe my gratitude, my unworthiness, my eternal service to Him who gave everything to save me. I don't want this to sound like an excuse, but I just haven't said "I love you" to my Savior anytime recently. I guess I wish I had some kind of divine term to use instead of "love." Or maybe I need a better definition of love, a more divine understanding.

Some reasons, though I know I could go on forever through my tears...
1. I know not from which He saved me. I have no idea what in this life and the next I could have expected had HE Not called me for His own.
2. He is so faithful, though I am not. The world offers a million distractions which pull my attentions away from Him, and though He literally has a million+ others to be paying attention to, He's there listening when I turn my heart back to Him.
3. He provides for me, though I sometimes fail to recognize Him as the ultimate Provider.
4. He wants to teach me. At times I feel so unworthy to hold His Word, to know and understand such profound details of His amazing plan.
5. He gave me a husband whom I do not deserve and who loves me despite myself, and three children so far for whom I pray desperately for wisdom to raise to honor Him.
6. He wants to use me for His kingdom work. This blows my mind.
7. He wants to spend eternity with me. How can I not love somebody who love me so much?

Thank you Lord. I do love you, more than I can possibly fathom.

Our New Venture Van Story

As a quick review- our Aerostar was my lesson in humility and obedience from God. I believe this with all my heart. And I was tied to it :-) I am so very thankful for this lesson, as I am all lessons, however painful they may be. God knows what we need, and His will and timing are for our best.

A few weeks ago, Gabe changed my oil in the Aerostar and found a bit of water in the oilpan. This apparently is a symptom of a couple different problems, none of which he wanted to take on as they would require a significant amount of parts removal from that teenie tiny engine space. :-) So he said it was time. In my heart, I jumped for joy, and yet was hesistant- how does God want me to proceed? I knew Gabe needed to be in charge of the new van purchase... a continuing lesson of obedience and submission.

So a week went by. I had noticed a few vans here and there at different car lots, and mentioned them to Gabe. At the end of the week, we discussed the fact that we hadn't made any progress. Because he's so busy, we agreed that I would round up information for him to look at. Over the next week, I made some calls, we both searched craigslist, and researched the vehicles that seemed to be available. We initially were looking for 4WD, but didn't have any luck finding anything in the age/mileage range we were looking for. Hondas and Toyotas were above our price range (we had saved up cash for this purchase), plus they just weren't around. There were several Town & Country's and Freestars, so we thought that was the direction we would probably be headed.

Monday morning came, and I had my list of available cars and stats ready for Gabe. We had many different windows open (our favorites were carcomplaints.com and edmunds.com) with the different vehicles we needed to compare. He sat down with them and started to read.

I had been praying for wisdom and guidance since we started. I know myself well enough to know that I will try to get the car I want to have instead of the car that is best for us, so I wanted this to be a God-thing. To truly say that I wanted the car He had for us instead of the one I wanted. To step back and let Gabe make the decision is a very hard thing to do! But because I'd seen God work exactly this way before, and because He'd been training my heart in this walk of submission, I wanted to actively trust both of them and Let go! Patience would have been a good prayer at the time, but I just didn't think of it. :-)

As Gabe finished reading and comparing the cars, he said "I'm just not thrilled with any of them." My heart sank. I'd gone to all this work, and I had a couple that I wanted to at least go see. But, step back, I reminded myself. I offered up a prayer of "Ok God. I don't understand, and I'm starting to doubt whether You care about our car purchase. But I want to wait on You." At this point I really did start to doubt- Does it matter? Did we walk the previous road with Him just because I needed to learn a lesson? (Previous road: Me wrestling with God about a van I absolutely did not want, just in case you are not familiar with "my van story.")
If this was just a "purchase," and not a "lesson," is He actually going to step in and guide us?What level of interaction with Him can I expect in this situation? Can I ask for the same supernatural involvement in our decision? Me: wanting to trust, wanting to walk with Him, but doubting what exactly is going on here.

Suddenly, Gabe says from the computer, "Hey- what is Pam's husband's name? I think this may be the M****'s van!" And a wave of peace washed over me. That's it. That's the one. Though I can't say for sure, I'm pretty sure Gabe felt exactly the same way. A bit of history here: Gabe drove this van a few years ago for Dare to Share (youth conference over the mountains). He told Pam that he liked her van. Several times on different occasions she's offered her van to us, but at one point Gabe told her it was out of our price range, and I'd told her that I haven't been released yet... so it was always a no. But now, the same time frame that we'd decided to buy, and had enough saved up, they had decided to go forward with listing it! It took a day to get in touch with them, but we both just knew. This was the one.

A funny thing was that it had been on craigslist for two days before we found it. I had never searched for "venture," and "van" wasn't in their title... when searching the main "autos" page, we were blinded I believe... It was a test of patience, especially since I had definitely been tempted to go out myself and "look" at vans while Gabe was working. I didn't, but the thought had certainly crossed my mind!

Another side note: Gabe has never been against getting a new van. He's always said we can if I really want to... and this has been my walk of submission to the Lord. I've never been "attached" to something before, but I truly was to the aerostar. Not an emotional attachment, but a tying... like it is not my decision to let go of it. He does not force us to Obey- I could have walked away at any time, but that wouldn't have been obedient and submissive to God's will; I knew this without a doubt. I needed to walk this road in my growing with Him.

Our new-to-us 2004 Chevy Venture minivan. A blessing from God. An answer to prayer. A lesson in patience and obedience. Thank you Lord, that when we seek You, You are Faithful to meet every need. Amen.

Motherhood is Hazardous to your health...and your brain....

Several times this morning I considered eating something other than my coffee, but kept thinking, "No, it's not lunchtime, or even snack time yet. I really don't need to eat a second breakfast."

When 11:00 rolled around, I started getting shaky. (I do this when my blood sugar levels get low.) Again, I looked at the clock and wondered "Why am I so hungry?" Suddenly I realized that I had not eaten ANYTHING this morning except my vitamins! No wonder! I quickly microwaved one of my breakfast burritos to get something in my tummy!

I think by the time I'm done having young children, my metabolism will be so off track I may never return to normal! Because, you see, this is a common occurence in our house. But normally I know that I didn't get to eat instead of swearing that I'd already had breakfast!

Interesting incident

The other day I was speaking with someone whose professional opinion I respect. He then surprised me with this statement.

"That's what I say the reason is for so many different religions in the world. God just has many different ways of speaking to His children."

I thought I'd throw this one at you. I didn't say anything, mainly because I was a tad bit shell shocked, as this came from a "Christian" man.

Oh, how we raise our own opinions above God's true Word.

What do you think?
