For those of you who don't know, we don't vaccinate our kids. It's a long story, but we don't. We are considering introducing some vaccines as our children get older, but it's not a done deal.
I receive the NVIC's (National Vaccine Information Center) emails on vaccine news. I must say, my jaw hit the desk with this one. (I copied and pasted this directly from the email sent out from NVIC on June 1st)
"In the past few months, the American public has been informed that two infant diarrhea vaccines - GlaxoSmithKline's Rotarix and Merck's RotaTeq - are contaminated with pig virus DNA. But there's a difference between the two vaccines: Rotarix contains parts of a pig virus that does not make pigs sick while Merck's RotaTeq contains parts of a pig virus that kills baby pigs. How many mothers know that, when Merck's diarrhea vaccine is squirted into the mouths of their two month old babies, they are swallowing parts of a pig virus that suppresses the immune systems of baby pigs so badly, they waste away and suffer respiratory, kidney, reproductive and brain damage before dying?"
Insert my sarcastic voice- "And people wonder why we are being cautious?!!"

SICK!! I rarely doubt our choice to not vaccinate our kids, but it is so nice to have little affirmations here and there. :) And not feel so alone. Alex was vaccinated on a delayed schedule until her one year shots she got the MMR and had a very scary reaction that the doctor REFUSED to report and would not admit it was from the vaccine. That was the last time any of my kids had a vaccine.
We are also considering introducing vaccines at some point, it would be so nice to chat with you about this sometime. :)
On the flip side...although i am not against vaccines I am also not opposed to people not vaccinating...I think it is definately a choice parents have to make and agree on...with that said...Brad and I have had both boys vaccinated and neither boy has had any reaction to any of the vaccines...although they were never given an oral diarhea vaccine so i don't know what that one is and not sure I would accept that one anyway. I guess I don't see the point in it but I would have to research it so see what it is even about. Thanks for sharing Denaye. :-\
Oh totally Lynn- My point is not to "not vaccinate," it's to be allowed to make INFORMED choices. And I personally don't believe we are informed with the whole picture unless we go looking for it, and the majority of parents don't. What really bothers me is that on our very near horizon is not even to be allowed to have a choice in the matter- forced vaccination. That is extremely scary.
