Melia and I had a little trouble over reading today. Tonight, when Gabe got home, I sat her down, wrote out the word, and asked her if she knew what it said. The word was JEEP. She said "VEHICLE." We were rolling with laughter... She shouts, "I got you!!!"
On that note, I feel like we've hit a road block. She knows almost all her sounds. We quizzed tonight and she knew all but 5 in the whole alphabet, and knew 3 of those 5's names, but not the sound. But when we put the sounds together into a word, it's almost like it overwhelms her. She can read several words by sight, but cannot sound them out. And she's SO easily distracted by anything... especially the pictures that often accompany the words. (She starts asking why that Horse is wearing a Hat and a Hula Hoop....Or why that Mouse does Magic...or when, what, etc) It's really hard not to get frustrated. Oh, and the YAWNS!!! They start up almost immediately when we sit down and she actually has to think about school work! (If its cutting or coloring or anything fun or creative- different story... but reading wears her out fast!)
Anyway, I just had to vent. I know this is all normal, but I just know she'll love reading SOOO much, and want that love I had for reading for her... It's hard not to push. And she gets a bit testy when we do things she already knows... Like copying/writing the letters... This schooling stuff is hard!!! But worth it, I know. Like parenting. I wouldn't miss it for anything, but some days I wish I could miss it :-)

Wow. She could have fooled me, if I didn't know better.

I totally empathize with you on this. Cameron does alot of the same things. We sit down to do summer work and all of a sudden it's like he's been up all night...he starts yawning and stretching and rubbing his eyes and stuttering over words that he normally reads. Not only that he stutters over words with me that he breezes over with his dad. He drives me so crazy sometimes. It takes so much patience on our part sometimes. But they'll get it and then they'll be so thankful that we pushed as hard as we did. :-) At least that's what i tell myself. LOL
It IS totally normal. :) The main goal here to have the lessons be FUN. To enjoy the experience of sitting down to read. Reading favorite books OVER and OVER and OVER again...is very good for little ones. They are proud to read what they know...they gain confidence and build fluency.
So, hard as it is...that's the best thing parents can do. If she's better at learning sight words...that just may be her best learning style..so I'll get you the first 400 sight word list...that we work our first graders through each year. Combine that (only 10 new words at a time) with the phonics and decoding piece, for well rounded teaching of reading. Again, each little block of time should focus on the fun of reading....(follow her lead here).
It will come! She's a bright little cookie. :)

I have found that most "easy reader" beginning books are not beginning at all. They have crazy words in them like you said... hula hoop? You'd have to know the oo sound.
Try going with Bob Books. You can get them really cheap at amazon.com and they truly start with the smallest, easiest words. My kids all started with them and it really takes a lot of those first frustrations out!
