Tonight at work, I'm sitting in the break room enjoying my dinner. Next to me sits a new gal that I have not met. I don't even know her name. We're watching the news, which is doing a special report on heroin and some kid is telling his story.
All of the sudden, she gasps, "Oh no, they kicked him out of school for getting caught doing heroin? I don't think that's a good idea. Then he's just out on the street. He needs to be in school."
What???!!
And yes, I have many responses to that :-) but I wanted to see if any of you had some you'd like to share...! *grin!*

I have two thoughts. One is I definitely agree that the kid shouldn't be in the general population of kids, exposing them to the same choices he is making and easy access to drugs. BUT school is probably the only place he has to go where adults care enough to see what he is doing (hypothetically.... hopefully they care...). These kids need somewhere to go to mentor them in a positive way without jeopardizing the rest of the kids.
Unfortunately I think there may not be one good answer anywhere... your thoughts?
My thoughts were along the same harsh lines :-)
My opinion is that kids who don't want to be there shouldn't be there. And- most of the time, they won't be! Why waste resources on kids who just drag others down? I would rather see some of those resources (or not- maybe a Christian organization would do a much better job!) go to providing that place where they can get mentoring and life skills without wasting other kids' and teachers' time.
And that got me going on a another thought- in favor of charter schools. You know how kids all learn differently? why don't we have schools oriented towards different learning styles? Then it wouldn't be the "smart kids" vs the "slow kids." Instead, theoretically, kids would each be challenged in ways that helped them to learn easier, instead of force fitting them into the mold of big classes and standardized testing.
Thoughts on that one? :-)
